Hi Guys I know this isnt a rare problem but just looking for some clarity. I have a 98 300tdi disco 1 auto with EDC. After having cold starting problems for a while I've just changed the lift pump and the glow plugs and for a few glorious weeks the landy has been starting first time every time.

Cylinder head cracking Manifold gasket failure Top end oil leaks Turbo failures Timing belt misalignment (300TDi) Loose crankshaft pulley bolt Injection pump failures Vacuum pump failures (300TDi) Drive belt noise (300TDi) Cooling fan viscous coupling failure Water pump failure Valve stem cap failures Displaced camshaft bearings
Ignition switch at position III, engine cranking and starts, volts drop to 9.5V or so then increases back up to 11.4v once starts and key back at position II but after several seconds the same clunk and the volts rises to around 14v as I presume the alternator charge kicks in. Seems strange.
Land Rover specify a 10W40 oil for the 300. If I understand what this guy is saying, a 5W40 or 0W40 would be better due to better flow when cold. The problem is that these are in the realm of exotic and expensive synthetics, while the standard mineral diesel oils are all going to be around 15W40.
